The panel was moderated by the Coordinator for Cybersecurity Matters and Head of the Division for Disarmament and Sensitive Technologies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Marcelo Paz Saraiva Câmara. 70 years of the Geneva Conventions – Opening session

Aiming to celebrate the 70 years of the Geneva Conventions, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Alexandre de Gusmão Foundation (FUNAG), the Swiss Embassy in Brasília, and the Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross conducted, on October 31st, 2019, at the Rio Branco Institute (IRBr), a seminar on the 70 years of the Geneva Conventions: contemporary challenges in international humanitarian law.

The seminar highlighted the importance of international humanitarian law and reflected on the current challenges to its implementation

The opening of the event was attended by General Director of the IRBr, Ambassador Maria Stela Pompeu Brasil Frota; Swiss Ambassador to Brazil, Andrea Semadeni; Head of the Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Simone Casabianca-Aeschlimann; and President of FUNAG, Minister Roberto Goidanich.

Global governance and self-determination of the peoples

The Alexandre de Gusmão Foundation (FUNAG) and the Rio Branco Institute promoted, on May 9 2019, a lecture and debate on global governance and self-determination of the peoples, by Filipe G. Martins, Special Advisor on International Affairs to the President of the Republic.

A Bachelor in International Relations from the University of Brasília, Filipe Martins is also a teacher, writer, and political analyst, with special interest in political philosophy, geopolitics, and forecasting.

The table was made up of Ambassadors Maria Stela Pompeu Brasil Frota, Director of FUNAG’s Institute for Research on International Relations, and Gisela Maria Figueiredo Padovan, Director of the Rio Branco Institute.

In his nearly two-hour long presentation, Martins addressed topics covering great current challenges. Among other concepts, he spoke on the difference between globalism and globalization, global governance, nationalism, and democracy.

The event was attended by diplomats, academics, journalists, and students.
